I haven't been carefully following this thread but you started with: "On a handful of hosts, our Java-based TN5250 emulator has a chronic problem of sporadic crashing" Are you using tn5250j or something else you have developed? The phrase "OUR Java-based TN5250 emulator" led me there. If it is tn5250j, have you modified the base code? Are you running it as a jar or using the applet version? If it is tn5250j, have you compared it to the whatever the latest version is? I ONLY use tn5250j and it has never crashed (Windows 10, IBM i 7.2) so I wonder if it is something in the code, either vanilla or what you have modified, that might cause the issue...
