Might want to come up with a use-case to learn with. Perhaps something like query db2 table and write to excel or maybe send an email with java mail. The other question is what type of apps ? Command line java utilities similar to CL programs ? Web applications ? Java Gui applications ? It always helps to have a small project in mind. You will need jt400.jar for DB access to IBMi even from within the box. Don't try to embed Java in RPG if you can help it. Interesting but convoluted. IDE: Eclipse/RDi or Netbeans are what I have used. Pretty good debugging build-in. Can test Java classes/programs on PC and then copy to IFS for deployment. Not a lot of beginner for IBMi resources.
