All I had to do was read the documentation on the CPY** instructions carefully.  

You can copy from (or TO, to modify the variable within the source program) a data-pointer defined variable.  That way, you don't have to define based-on storage.

It would still be wise, of course, to use MATPTR to see just what kind of storage you are copying.  Unless that is known in advance...
