That was my next move... but having panicked first, I didn't see it in the
exported MI list and with no prototypes in QSYSINC, I figured it wasn't
available.

Okay, so call the builtin... what's the problem?

That's because it's a builtin.  The stuff you see exported from service 
programs are wrappers to MI functions designed to make them easier to use 
from C.  Only a tiny fraction of the MI functions are available this way.
