I like that. But 'pair' is a dangerous pun, since it's commonly used to
join list nodes. Perhaps another good word would be 'cut' or 'knife', to
evoke cutting the data apart to make it go with the data. The one word
we can't use is cleave.

But the 'knife' and 'fork' expressions just seem to go together. Except
that there is no spoon.
