Hi,

Which is the new one, the Borland homepages one?

I think for every book that says the best team leaders delegate you'll find
as many that say the best team leaders lead by example. You kinda have to
suck it and see, there's no magic formula - especially for open source.

I mostly disagree. *8)

In more business related environments, all of the above may hold true. But
you're talking about applying business practice to an open source
community. It's not going to work because the time people have to work on
a project is limited by other factors (job, life etc) and even the most
active contributors change quite frequently.

I'm on the team of JCL developers. I've been pretty silent for a while due
to a lot of work and moving house, but I still read the forums and watch
mantis.

If we were working to a scheme where work was delegated then I'd feel I had
to drop out because I know I would be unreliable for completion of work
within a certain time. As things stand at the moment, if something I'm
working on impacts Jedi, then I'll update it and keep going. I'm not
actively seeking Jedi work, but if I find something that fits at the moment
I'm in a position to do it.

Add a chain of delegatory command and suddenly it's someone elses delegated
responsibility, someone elses job to chase them and nobody will sign up to
work on anything unless they're 100% positive they've got the time. Which
in the world of open source is going to be very few people indeed.

Cheers,
Rik
