I have already posted the first part of my tutorial to the mailing list about serial communicaion programming in Delphi. So practice it and try to write your own components from it.

It is really a good idea to learn how to do it. But not using a component is really a bad idea. Now
that you've learned how to do serial I/O and sockets using Windows API, I hope you encapsulated your
work into two components. That's better application design !
