 If you are a real beginner, then my reccomendation is to buy following two books.
  
 Mastering Delphi 3 by Marco Cantu. 
 
This book takes you through delphi's oop steructure in a fairly deep leve. Also it takes you through many important areas in a level that a biginner would really appreciate.
 
Then buy the latest mastering book of the same author. 
 
Marco Cantu is an award winning writer for Borland Delphi. He has been widely recognized for clear methods of explaining the theories in his book. The difference of his style is that he always tries to keep the student hold on more system oriented understanding than language oriented understanding about delphi and windows. 
 
My first programming language was assembly language (1995). When i needed more high level functionalities (even than C) but still in a need to access the system more closely, Pascal, Delphi provided me the ideal enviornment and Marco Cantu gave me the ideal guidlines.
