Hi,

I am currently developing a driver and a library (Delphi and later also C) that can be used as either DLL or unit to access the parallel ports on a system in a controlled and appropriate manner (not the usuall generic I/O port access or modification of the I/O permissions list). Actually the driver is already in beta-stage and the library could be called finished (despite a not yet very exhaustive documentation).

The library is simple (no knowledge needed about the particular port, such as controller address and so on) and works from Windows 2000 onwards (could potentially work on NT4 as well, couldn't test it, yet). The driver itself will be released under GPL (intentionally) and the library can be released under any license approved as open source (including MPL, zlib and others). The GPL licensing, however, shall not limit the developers ability to embed the driver in the executable resources (i.e. the binary will *not* be affected by the GPL in that case, which will be clearly stated in an amendment!) - I'll also evaluate whether the LGPL might be more appropriate.

-> Last but not least a request, could anyone here who has already worked with raw LPT port I/O please contact me for a beta test. Also, if you want to spread the word, don't hesitate. The driver is still under no particular license and must not yet be redistributed, but the above licenses will enter into force with the first public release!

Oliver

PS: If one of the JEDI projects is interested in releasing the driver and the library under their project's name, get in touch with me. This is by far not the first code from me included in a JEDI project ;)
