libc + some other stuff

i was searching for a way to get the username of whom started the application & hostname of the pc the app was running on in Kylix 2 Enterprise
Edition on Redhat 7.3

and i found how to do it, add libc to uses clause & use some functions from libc, is this libc documented somewhere, cause i can get
the username & hostname now, but the rest of the stuff is a bit cryptic :)

in 99% of the cases homedir is /home/+username, but there are other cases

is there  any way to retrieve the current users homedir ?

or if anyone has some more info about the libc functions available :)

then another question, will this only work for libc, or can you use like any library available on your linux system ?
