root privileges

Hi everybody, I guess there is a way to get root privileges to run my app. Well, only my application or, even better, perform something inside my application (read/write on IO ports to get/set can registers) as I were root, while it was launched as an ordinary user. How to do that? Or, anyway, what is the correct procedure to do that, provided the application is to drive an electronic machinery, so that prompts for passwords are a-no-so-good-solution...
