ADSL modem driver

I'v got a broadband connection but neither my ISP (BTOpenworld), the 
modem maker nor the modem distibuter (Fujitsu here in the UK) has a 
driver for linux. I thought it would be enlightening to learn how to 
write a device driver for this device but I'm not sure where to begin. 

What I am sure about is that the device is a USB device. I know that 
there is not much in the way of USB device support for linux but I do 
know that it is there.

I also think I am reasoably in the belief that the functions that the 
driver needs to implement are

1) Device open - open comunications between the modem and the computer
2) Device write - send information to be transmitted by the modem
3) Device read - get information recieved by the modem
4) Device status - get the current status of the the modem
5) Device close - close communications between the modem and the 
computer

This is NOT (at the moment) for any use other than my own and to clear 
up any doubt what I intend to end up with is a linux box running as a 
router/firewall
