Making an eMail Application the Default

We are currently in the process of finishing up an in-house eMail application and are 
having trouble finding information on what the application (or its installer ?) must do to 
show up in the list of eMail apps on IE's Tools / Options / Programs page.

Any pointers in the right direction will be appreciated.
