I believe the usual method for an ellipse is to draw the "bounding
rectangle" (the horizontal rectangle that circumscribes the ellipse) as well
as the ellipse inside it.  The user drags and draws the rectangle, with the
ellipse following along.  When the user ends the drag, the ellipse is
finalized so the rectangle disappears.
