has a great vxd based free utility called regmon.

U may have had more fun writing your utility though

I just wrote a simple component that monitors the registry for changes,
notifies you when a key is changed etc, it is a wrapper for the api
calls.
 
I did this because I wanted such a component and everytime  I search I
can't find one or they are commercial, if anyone else wants this I can
send it to you.
 
I thought it might be helpful to some
