i received a message from the above in response to my question, and 
the message was that the attachment had a solution - the attachment 
was in fact a virus!

my scanner picked it up immediately, but others of you without an 
online checker beware.

this was no accident - he / she specifically told  me the answer 
was "attached" leading any normal person to open the attachment 
straight away.
