Hello all!

We hope you are having a good week!

Its been an interesting week.
Read about "TurboPower discontinues retail
business!" below.

We have lots of interesting links and tips for
you in this issue so be sure to check them out.

Most programmers already know about OOS/RSI and that's
good. Here is some additional information about this
important subject:

OOS/RSI:

Working with a computer system for long periods of time can be
bad for your health.
Remember to take short breaks, relax, stretch and exercise your
hands, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers.

Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS) or Repetitive Strain Injury
(RSI) is an enemy of the computer programmer.
RSI is an acronym for Repetitive Strain Injury, and is another
name for OOS.

OOS has been defined as:
A complex disorder producing a variety of symptoms brought about
by repeatedly carrying out the same movements over a period of time
which may vary from hours to years. The condition often develops in an
atmosphere of tension and stress. [Arndt, 1986 p.1]

If you get a sore neck while using your computer make sure your
computer monitor (Screen) is at a height that is comfortable for you.
Your computer screen should be adjustable for both brightness and
contrast, as well as in height and tilt.

Your computer chair can be a problem as well.
If you suffer pain in your back or lower spine then your
chair may be the problem.
A good computer chair needs to be adjustable for seat height,
backrest angle, backrest height and be able to swivel 360°.

The ideal healthy computing environment should allow the computer
programmer to have control over the lighting of the room.
Watch out for screen glare, this can cause headaches and sore eyes.

Wrist-rests are another option you could consider.

You could also use Preventative Software which can remind the
programmer when it is time to take a break, this is sometimes
called "break software".
Exercise software can also be used to show the user exercises
and techniques they can use to prevent or alleviate OOS/RSI.
Write your own OOS Preventative Software to suit your own
needs or search the internet.

RSI/OOS, although often treatable, can become intractable conditions
that ruin careers and lives through permanent disability and pain.
Over and over, experts have stressed... that the best way to treat these

injuries [OOS] is to prevent them from ever happening.
[Sellers, 1996, p.147].

For the computer I use for work I have two mice connected so I can use
both my right and left hands for mouse movement.
One is the Logitech mouse that came with my computer and the other
is a Logitech Cordless TrackMan FX.
With a bit of practice I can now easily use both my right and left hands

to control the mouse.
You should never use a cheap mouse because over a period of time a cheap

mouse has a much higher chance of causing strain on your hand and wrist.

Browse down the page to view the tips and
examples, Delphi links, etc.
We have collected many helpful links to
keep you busy for a while.
These links cover many different areas of Delphi
programming and there may be a link that will
help you with your latest Delphi project.

While surfing the internet our family found an entire
episode of the Joe 90 childrens TV program.
We have included a link to the official Joe 90 website
so you can download this episode for your
own children (or yourself :-)

A Delphi Tip from Bernard Marcelly:

Here is a small project in a Zip file called TestFormat.
The purpose is to help understand the power of formatting strings in
Delphi. Once compiled, the programmer can test
different strings and see the result. It works with the routines:
  - Format
  - FormatFloat
  - FormatDateTime

It was written in Delphi 4 but should work or could be
adapted to previous versions.

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse
and keyboard between multiple computers with
different operating systems, each with its own
display, without special hardware.
It's intended for users with multiple computers
on their desk since each system uses its own
monitor(s).

Synergy is open source and released under
the GNU Public License (GPL).

*** Delphi Super Tip ***

EM_LineScroll:
[EM_LINESCROLL , Characters to scroll
horizontally, Lines to scroll vertically);]

EM_LineScroll can be used to scroll vertically
or horizontally in a multiline edit control.
In the example below we add a lot of lines of
text into a TMemo (Memo1).

Everytime you click on Button1, Memo1 will
scroll down.

Example:

procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject);
begin
  Memo1.Perform(EM_LineScroll, 0, 5);
end;

TurboPower discontinues retail business!

“We’ve been a big part of the developer
community for nearly 18 years,” said TurboPower
President Gary Frerking.
“Open sourcing our products seems like an
appropriate gesture of appreciation to the
community that supported us so well over the
years.
We sincerely hope these products take on a
life of their own and continue to prosper for
many years to come.”
