Panic over. It was a problem with topaz and its index setting routine. It keeps resetting the index to a previous value - presumably it is stored in the source code somewhere. The Index key creation routine from the object inspector regularly falls over on me and I see 'tag already in use' quite often. Next question - why does the datetimepicker go to a date in 1752 when you press the home key?
