Alex is 100% correct. The standard version was intended to provide a
platform for students to learn Object Pascal. The thinking was that, at one
time, Pascal was considered THE teaching language. Microsoft's Visual Basic
became so popular that today it is hard to find a College or University in
the USA that offers courses in Pascal. The standard version was Borland's
attempt to reclaim some of the instructors/professors who liked teaching
with Pascal. The unfortunate part of the whole thing is that VB is so widely
accepted in the US business community, schools must teach VB in order for
their graduates to be employable, and there are only so many classroom
hours. When I first started using Delphi, I had never used Pascal. I tried
to find a school (college level) in my area that offered Pascal courses. I
live in the largest city in my State, and none of the local schools even
offered Pascal classes, much less Delphi.

Sorry, I got carried away. In short, the standard version is for learning
Object Pascal. It was never intended for commercial use, or developing
database applications. Borland's position is that if you are developing
commercial applications, you should use the Professional or Enterprise
versions. This is demonstrated by Borland manuals and 3rd party books. Many
code samples can only be duplicated with the Enterprise version.  Very few
can be duplicated with the standard version.

BTW, in some circles the standard version is referred to as the basic
version. Obviously, this implies basic means like Basic.

Sorry to ramble. I just wish Delphi was marketed more effectively.
