Right click the shortcut. Is the executepath set  to the correct path?
With XP pro, you can set a compatibility mode. You could try that option.

XP has this system restore stuff. What it does is take a copy of some data,=

and store it in some internal structure. You could try putting that off
(system-->systemrestore). You can put it on and off per partition.
