More precisely, `hash_function' was initially introduced because
the feature `hash_code' of DOUBLE is very bad. So it was more
a workaround than a new functionality.

And then, it was used to provide case-insensitive hash codes for
strings.

It would be indeed better (and more reusable) to have different
classes.
