Reg Expressions Escape Characters

Hi,

I would like to know if the regular expression library has a built in
way to tell the regular expression compiler to treat the input string in
a strict fashion, so that treats all metacharacters as literals
automatically.  If not I guess I would write a small routine to insert
an escape (\) character in front of every string before sending it as
input.
