Some more information: My need was that in order to implement XPath 2.0, I needed to support XSD times, dates and durations. As these are almost, but not quite, ISO 8601 compliant, I attempted to implement a single library with configuration options. But this proved to be too complex (at least, for me). I didn't have a copy of ISO 8601:2004 (indeed, I have not heard of it before seeing this message), but I guess that there won't be too many differences.
