Dear hackers, dear users,
ladies and gentlemen,
bad and good alike,
The SmartEiffel team is proud to announce new features to help opening
our development process.
Let people know!
== WIKI ==
A new Wiki has been set up. It has two aims:
- provide a means to build a book that explains SmartEiffel, its
philosophy, its design, its tools, and its libraries
- provide a place for the SmartEiffel community to grow
The Wiki is available on our web site (http://SmartEiffel.loria.fr).
Your are invited to log in there and contribute.
The wiki currently exists in French and in English. We would welcome
help in translating French pages.
Also note that we are looking for a logo. There is a page on the wiki
that explains what we would like it to be. So sharpen your pencils and
participate!
== REPOSITORY ==
A repository has been set up to provide an up-to-date access to the
source code of SmartEiffel, complete with its history.
The aim of this repository is for people to easily contribute. It uses
a "pull" mode, instead of a "push".
The repository uses the "cogito" tool developped by Linus Torvalds,
Petr Baudis and others. Currently this tool works only on Linux but
AFAIK the back-end, "git" is available to other SCMs such as darcs.
* git, cogito: http://kernel.org/pub/software/scm/cogito/README
* darcs: http://abridgegame.org/darcs/
Note that RPMS are available, and Debian also provides a cogito package.
Now, why cogito? Because I am thrilled by the sheer speed of
development... Also because I found it very siple to install, and
mainly because it is *very* scriptable, I can maintain coherence with
our CVS with crontab and simple scripts.
The SmartEiffel external repository is
http://www.cadrian.net/~cyril/eiffel/SmartEiffel.git
So to get it, once cogito is installed, just do
# cg-clone http://www.cadrian.net/~cyril/eiffel/SmartEiffel.git
The repository is synced with our CVS every hour.
To keep in sync, go in your git-controlled SmartEiffel directory
and type
# cg-update
As we go along, we'll have to write a document (yes, you too could help)
about how to bootstrap this raw repository. The current procedure would
be something very similar to the snapshot bootstrap procedure.
Once you start making changes to your repository, you have to
* either publish your repo (on the web)
* either prepare a patch and send the patch
In both cases, please send a mail when you want your changes to be
included. I am responsible for the repository maintainance. Please send
mails to [email protected]
Note that patches will not necessarily get accepted, some will have to
be discussed. But in all cases, I commit myself to give you an answer
and justification. If I don't, feel free to poke me ;-)
Also: the snapshot stays alive for people who prefer to download a
tarball.
== TEST SUITE ==
The test suite is not yet available, we have to clean up things but
we will make it available. Yes, before years go by.
== LIBRARY LICENCE ==
We are aware of the problem with our library licence. We will solve that
before 2.2 is out. The licence will be either EFL2 or MIT (still being
discussed).
The SmartEiffel Team hopes you will enjoy those new tools as much as we
enjoyed setting them up for you.
Best regards and happy SmartEiffeling to all!
