exactly, linux - not solaris, and very likely no bsd or any other
unix either.

and the problems I have are mostly inherited by the git codebase inside
cogito, so darcs better implements git separately if they have _any_
motivation to get this portable (not taking into account for the moment
that ghc, which darcs builds upon isn't very portable in the first
place)

I try to work around those issues..
