No external Java compiler found

I'm trying to compile to java with 2.2 beta 2.

After:

se java se.ace


I get:

****** Fatal Error: No external Java compiler found !


which javac reports:

/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01/bin/javac

so apparently se is not simply searching the path for a binary named
javac.

My system is Linux Fedora Core 4.
