Vlad sent a nice link about special arguments to dvips to improve
things:

Using those, I created a better document:

But you can see there's much room for improvement. Here is the output
from texi2pdf, which is absolutely excellent except that the darned
diagram isn't scaled correctly:

Next step is to investigate why the picture doesn't scale
right. Perhaps it was naive of me to convert a diagram from EPS to PDF
with ps2pdf..
