I believe the problem is related to Emacs 23 or Ubuntu (my guess would be the
version of emacs). I have successful tried distel with Emacs 22 on debian.

I am using Emacs 23 for the anti-aliasing support (xft) from the following
repository : http://peadrop.com/blog/2007/01/06/pretty-emacs/

I have had exactly the same problem as Matthew described and I am stuck at the
exact same point.

I have the two versions of emacs in two different machines. I will try to give
some more information as soon as I have access to both machines.
