Ask not what you can take from Emacs, ask what else you can put into it! Seriously, I used to want to replace Emacs, but now I think it's just the best program in the world. > What's the status of ermacs? Usable? Anyone hacking on it? > Anyone using it? Hasn't been touched in quite some time. It's quite usable, but feels very under-featured compared with Emacs. Especially because I didn't get around to adding incremental-search. I can recommend having a play around with it from the Jungerl though :-) The Ermacs design isn't really as nice as Emacs. I used an abstract datatype for text, which makes it efficient but boringly non-pattern-matchable, and generally avoided side-effects too much - they are really convenient in text editing. It was extremely fun to write though. There are so many interesting design options in programmable text editors, I imagine it's a lot like making a programming language or operating system. (Bet they're hard to get right first time as well :-) Actually, Ermacs is better than Emacs for editing really large (10-100MB) files, so I have the occasional legitimate use for it still.. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program.
