Is now moot. I did not read Chuck's site, nor these archives thoroughly
enough. Reading this post:

...gave me what I needed. I found my ethernet card, and work can begin
adapting existing network code to my hardware. I'll probably write a java
network bot to test messaging capabilites. Gives me a known quantity to test
against.
