Just for your information, I now think this is a problem with the device. Perhaps it's the Android-modified kernel or system libraries. Perhaps it's some malware. I think this because I just now experienced a similarly impossible bug in bash; it messed up how it split words. Whether it messed up depended on things unrelated to to quoting of the words themselves, paralleling the above-quoted issue which disappears if the order of block loading is changed.
