Really, this desire for fewer columns is just a stubborn holdover from the days (which I too remember) of reading code on 80 column monitors and dot matrix printer output on pin-feed, fan-fold paper. It would be a shame if such a good language were intentionally limited by memories of primitive 20th century technologies :^) A better argument for keyword terseness is to limit typing (but that's not much of an argument either - people who code frequently should take the time to learn touch typing).
