BTW the "semaphore" solution mentioned was introduced in this
proposal: https://github.com/ghc-proposals/ghc-proposals/pull/540

Looks like it may be present in the latest Cabal (3.10) and latest GHC
(9.8)? I'm curious to know if anyone's using it yet. :)
