This is superb, thanks Wolfgang.  I've only skimmed through it, but I'll read it 
in detail later.

Yes, at some point we should have a discussion about what we want to support in 
6.8 w.r.t. dynamic linking, and how best to integrate it into the build system 
and installers.  Feel free to kick this off when you're ready.
