Oh, ok. In that case I'll revise my bug report to a documentation bug: 
there's no information about obtaining hugs from CVS, either on the 
website (http://www.haskell.org/hugs) or in the Dec2001 distribution. 
Given the hint, I can divine that the CVS info is similar to that for 
GHC, but I had no reason to look at the GHC pages when getting started 
with hugs98 the other day.
