Thanks for your kind words about Jython. We will be sprinting on Jython at PyCon in Montreal, April 13–16. My personal priority at the sprints is working on the C extension API support/JyNI with Stefan Richthofer, now that gc observability has landed (and part of the recently released 2.7.0 beta 4). Release candidate 1 work for 2.7.0 is now in progress: in particular we have a CPython-based launcher that just got committed, mostly to support Windows, which is the last major piece of this release. But supporting Python 3.x is also important. With some minor modifications to the compiler and grammar, we can support the core language aspects and maybe some of the standard library in Python 3, given all the recent improvements for 2.7. It will be an interesting question how big the effort would be to actually complete this support. Part of my talk on Jython at PyCon will be on 3.x support; https://us.pycon.org/2015/schedule/presentation/351/: So how did we get to Jython 2.7 anyway? And what are our future plans? In this talk, you will get a taste of how Jython works, some new functionality, and especially how Jython leverages both Python and Java to provide a very compatible solution. My feeling is that we should start a Jython 3 branch in advance of the sprints, and hopefully Frank Wierzbicki will have some time to hammer on the grammar. -- - Jim Jim Baker On February 18, 2015 at 5:07:11 PM, Mike Rodent ([email protected]) wrote: Dear Jythonistas, It seems like Python 3.4 may be the catalyst which causes significant numbers of people to switch to Python 3 finally. The accomplishments of the Jython 2.x team are fantastic. Jython is The Best. But ... isn't it becoming a bit of a pressing issue to start thinking about Jython 3? Regards M.
