I see the 'merging' way as a bad choice. Yes, _if_ the authors agree, 
and _if_ they can share stuff. Normally, they are mostly concerned with 
their own thing (is it this just me? ;).

The way to harmonize this (imho) is just to go forward and enforce some 
variant by plain using it. Like LuaCheia does.
