multi-core / multi-machine compiling?

Has anyone thought about how to make the mlton compiler run in a distributed fashion? Some other languages have implementations that can compile very fast and can do so in parallel. I know mlton is doing complex whole-program analysis, but surely there are parts in the process that could be parallelized?
