There is an XML-parsing library in pure SML that you may want to try.
I haven't had any problems using it, but I can't say much about its
performance, except that it has been fast enough for me.

It is included in the tom7 library:

(It was its own project, but tom7 went through all the boring but
nontrivial work of getting it to compile with MLton.)
