I put in the initial use of libgmp to MLton. I know that at the time libgmp performance was way way way better than anything else around. It really is incredibly zippy and I really wanted fast support for bignum arithmetic. I don't know anything about bsdmp except what is on their home page, but it says that switching from gmp to bsdmp is nontrivial. Also gmp has been around for quite a while now.
