In fact, as Dave pointed out to me, the problem comes with PHP has not been
configured to use the client libraries installed with MySQL.  Read the
"Installation" section on the following page:

  http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mysql.php

Now, I do not know what this means for versions of Apache and PHP that were
installed via distribution packages such as RPMs or debs.  I guess it kind
of depends on how the packages were created.

To be safe, if you plan to run PHP and Moto under the same instance of Apache
you should configure PHP using --with-mysql .

I will add a section on the support page to point this out.
