Oops, I should have provided that information up front. I've the
version of nice.jar which is available off portage. It claims this is
version 0.9.9

I'm using the 64-bit version of java 1.5.0_08 on an AMD64 architecture.

... all of which is probably irrelevant because on replacing nice.jar
with nice-current.jar it all starts working. Sorry, that should really
have been one of the first things I checked rather than concluding
that the build was broken.

All in all, not a very good start to my tinkering with the nice
compiler. Colour me embarassed. :-)
