Rethreading messages

I've got a mailbox with about 6000 messages from a list. The list server (6.0c -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas) was setup to strip most headers (argh!) including In-Reply-To. I'm now trying to import this into hypermail but hypermail isn't showing any threads. I'm wondering if there's any way to re-thread by subject or any other method using Mail::Box. Mutt, for example, is reasonably good at threading messages by subject if the normal threading headers are not available. Also, it seems like hypermail cannot deal with messages out of order. Can I get Mail::Box to sort by Date: and recreate the mbox file? (I think Hypermail uses the Date: header, which results in some odd entries in the list archive when clients set the wrong date.)
