Red Hat AS 3, Perl 5.8.0, error in Reporter.pm

I'm new to this mailing list and apologize if this has been asked and
answered ( did a quick check of the archives but didn't find it).

On our system running Red Hat AS 3 Update 8 and perl 5.8.0, Red Hat has
patched something in the perl libraries that has broken Reporter.pm.

Upon attempting to reinstall Mail::Message gives this:

Running make test
Prepending /root/.cpan/build/File-HomeDir-0.58/blib/arch
/root/.cpan/build/File-HomeDir-0.58/blib/lib to PERL5LIB.
PERL_DL_NONLAZY=3D1 /usr/bin/perl "-Iblib/lib" "-Iblib/arch" test.pl
 is only avaliable with the XS version at lib/Mail/Reporter.pm line 9
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at lib/Mail/Reporter.pm line 9.
Compilation failed in require at test.pl line 13.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at test.pl line 13.

The error in Reporter.pm is also the one reported at runtime prior to
attempting to reinstall.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
