Aha, thank you. That was much more along the lines of the sort of reply
I was hoping to get to this thread.


As a general note to everyone else who replied, and also for this list
in general: We should remember that this isn't a "perl users'
discussions forum". We're not here to moan about how awkward problems
are in the core perl binary and provide links and workarounds to those.
We're directly in control of that perl binary and we can change it. We
can fix it. We can remove these problems, rather than merely papering
over them.

This is more what we should be thinking about around here.

We started discussing this on the recent meeting of the new PSC, which
lead to this note in the summary:

  > itself, handling perl version upgrades and so on.

I'm in the process of writing up a PrePPC discussion about that now,
which will hopefully end up being a proper improvement to the overall
situation of a bunch of related problems.
