I played around a bit more with BFS. Here are 
some of the longest ladders - might come in 
handy for timings, stress tests and compari-
sons. (Of course, I should have mailed these 
last week to be actually useful.)

17 steps: idol -> upas
37 steps: alure -> yasht
54 steps: peltry -> zounds
40 steps: cortina -> turjite
37 steps: deadness -> thusness
(for longer word lengths, the ladders become very 
boring indeed. indefectibly -> undelectably ?)

20 steps: inca -> ursa
47 steps: agway -> troop

34 steps: array -> rosid
47 steps: limply -> trusty

If anyone found a longer ladder for a given word 
length, I'd love to hear about it - proof that 
my little program isn't quite as rigorous as it 
ought to be.
