I played around a bit more with BFS. Here are some of the longest ladders - might come in handy for timings, stress tests and compari- sons. (Of course, I should have mailed these last week to be actually useful.) Webster2 17 steps: idol -> upas 37 steps: alure -> yasht 54 steps: peltry -> zounds 40 steps: cortina -> turjite 37 steps: deadness -> thusness (for longer word lengths, the ladders become very boring indeed. indefectibly -> undelectably ?) words 20 steps: inca -> ursa 47 steps: agway -> troop wordnet 34 steps: array -> rosid 47 steps: limply -> trusty If anyone found a longer ladder for a given word length, I'd love to hear about it - proof that my little program isn't quite as rigorous as it ought to be. -- Jurgen Pletinckx AlgoNomics NV
