I'm a bit flattered that my solution was chosen as the simple-minded reference 
solution. Of course, I can objectively say it was one of the simplest and 
shortest that were submitted, and also one with minimal complexity. I did not 
notice any discussion regarding it in the mailing list, but it is possible it 
just wasn't interesting or obscure enough to warrant such discussion.

One note I could say about it was that I had a clear idea of the algorithm 
from the start, but it took me some time in front of the computer to play 
with the nuances until I got it right. It reminds me that it took more than 
10 years from the time binary search was invented until the first correct 
binary search implementation was written. (Possibly it was partially because 
computers back then, were heavily underpowered and harder to program than 
their modern counterparts).
