[ADMIN PERL-QOTW] Special one-time administrative message - please read

In hopes of clearing up some confusions about the way the list works, I
am trying to include all the important information at once.  Please
read the whole thing, since there is very likely to be something here
you didn't know.

I won't be sending out such messages regularly.


=== 1. Mailing lists

There are now three mailing lists.  You are on perl-qotw.  perl-qotw
will receive about four or five messages per week: two quizzes, two
sample solutions, and perhaps an administrative note like this one.

All discussion about the quizzes, questions, proposed solutions,
discussion of proposed solutions, chitchat, and other material should
be posted to perl-qotw-discuss.

perl-qotw-discuss has been getting about 25 messages per day.  If that
is too much traffic for you, you may want to subscribe to
perl-qotw-discuss-digest instead.

Periodically, everything posted to perl-qotw-discuss will be packaged
up into a single message and sent to perl-qotw-discuss-digest.
Instead of 150 small messages per week, perl-qotw-discuss-digest will
receive four or five large messages.  In the digests, the messages are
organized into threads.

To subscribe:

If you want your messages sent to some other address, say

=== 4. Moderation

All lists are moderated in one way or another.  That means that if you
post to a list, the message might not go out right away; instead, it
might end up in my mail box, and be sent out only if I approve it.

Every message to perl-qotw ends up in my mail box.  I am unlikely to
approve any of these messages.  I will post the quizzes and sample
solutions myself.  All the messages that go out to perl-qotw have
'Reply-To' pointing to perl-qotw-discuss.

Posts to perl-qotw-discuss are automatically approved for subscribers
of that list or the digest list.  Non-subscribers' messages come to me
for approval.  

If you are a non-subscriber, and you want your messages to be
automatically approved, let me know.

If you are a subscriber who receives messages at a different address
from the address you post from, and you want your messages to be
automatically approved, let me know.  (I have been trying to detect
these and take care of them as they come up.)

I'll probably want to find a backup moderator who can handle routine
approvals if I happen to be unavailable.  If you're interested in the
position, send me mail.  

=== 5. Schedule

Quizzes will appear on perl-qotw on Wednesdays.  Sample solutions will
appear on perl-qotw on the following Monday.

Please do not post hints, sample solutions, or other spoilers in
perl-qotw-discuss until the Saturday after the quiz has appeared.  See
http://perl.plover.com/qotw/why-wait.html for an explanation.  It is
OK to ask questions about the quiz or to discuss other related matters
before Saturday.

Starting on Saturday, you may post your solutions, or offer hints or
suggestions.  If you do this, please tag the 'Subject' line of your
message with '[SPOILER]'.

A digest of perl-qotw-discuss is sent to perl-qotw-discuss-digest:

        whenever 30 new perl-qotw-discuss messages have acumulated 
or 
        whenever 64kb of messages have accumulated
or
        after three days,

whichever comes first.
