Jose Alves de Castro (and Shlomi Fish before him) asked a very good
question on the -discuss list:
Hi. I subscribed this list (as well as the qotw one) for about
two weeks now, but I haven't seen any movement on it...
Is anyone still using it? Is anyone going to read this mail
and answer me back? :-|
Lots of people are reading, and did answer, including me.
Here's what I said:
The long sleep was entirely my fault. As you say, I am
extremely busy. I am in the final stages of finishing my
book, which I think will go into production in the next week
or two. I also have a lot of new personal responsibilities.
The QOTW has been weighing on my mind for a long time, and I
am glad that you wrote to ask what was going on with it.
I would like to see the list revived, but I think that this
would be a good time for me to stop fooling myself that I can
do it myself.
I think this is a good time to see if the QOTW community can take over
some of the hard work of running the QOTW. I would like to see other
folks contributing the quizzes and the sample solutions.
Here's what I would like to do:
1. The quiz schedule will change. There wil be only one quiz per week
instead of two. We will alternate between regular and expert
quizzes, one of each every two weeks.
2. Volunteers will contribute quizzes and sample solutions. Please
volunteer! Make up a quiz suggestion and send it to the submission
address, which is "perl-qotw-submit". Try to follow the format of
older quizzes, which you can find in the archives at
http://perl.plover.com/~alias/list.cgi/0/
I will take care of releasing the quizzes on schedule. About a
week after your quiz comes out, you should be ready with your
sample solution to the quiz. If you want to read the -discuss list
and write up a summary of the solutions posted there, that's good
too. The -discuss list is archived at
http://perl.plover.com/~alias/list.cgi/1/
3. If you have questions, email me.
My grateful thanks to everyone who participated in the discussion.
The continued health of the QOTW list will depend on having a good
supply of volunteers to make up quizzes and sample solutions. I hope
it works out. If you'd like to do a quiz, but you can't think of
anything interesting, you might have a look at
http://perl.plover.com/qotw/ideas/
which contains the private files in which I was recording my own quiz
ideas.
Thanks again to all of you.
