The developer's machine is a paradise so long as the developer is a demi-god with admin rights. Developing the solution in one environment and then deploying it within a large corporation with sticky issues like restricted user rights is another kettle of fish altogether. Which part of Config::Std is standard distro? Sometimes hacks like hard coding a user path or using user environment vars are the only option - proving the exception to the rule. But you've got to go with Prof. DC - he's writing parts of Perl6 after all . . .
